JANUARY

New Year's Day 2007 1st January - All Entry Points

As the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 (VMY 2007) kicks-in on this first day of the new year, passengers who catch the first ferry from Kuala Kedah, Kuala Perlis or Satun, Thailand will be in for a pleasant surprise courtesy of the Langkawi Tourism Action Council (LTAC). Souvenirs will be given to all early bird arrivals.

FEBRUARY

Sauk Sotong (Squid Scooping Challenge) 2007 10 February - Kuala Chenang Jetty

An exciting evening of squids galore. A traditional annual squid 'harvest' when the seas off Langkawi lights up as fishermen and participants of this competition try to lure as many squids to their nets as possible.

Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2007 4 - 9 February - Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC)

An event that has become the talk of South East Asia, the Regatta will see more than 50 yachts competing in nine highly-charged racing classes! Sailors from all corners of the globe can enjoy the fun and excitement of the Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2007.Do not miss all the drama and excitement on the high seas!

Le Tour de Langkawi 2007 7 - 11 February - Ministry of Youth and Sports

One on the best cycling races outside Europe and the richest in Asia, the 12th Le Tour de Langkawi promises to be an action-packed event that keep cycling fans on the edge. Catch the the action as top international riders traverse spectacular and treacherous terrain from the idyllic island of Langkawi to Dataran Merdeka in the city of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia.

Langkawi Ironman Triathlon 2007 24 February - Langkawi Ironman Endurance Marathon (LIEM)

The safe and "doable" course for Ironman Langkawi takes competitors through local villages as well as the water front area of Kuah town in which the race is based. The swim is a two-lap 3.8km swim in Kuah Bay, starting and finishing alongside the giant eagle statue that dominates the Jetty Point port area. The bike course is a three laps 180.2km on a basically flat road with the transition to the run being held at Eagle Square. The 42.2km run is over a four-lap course, which is flat and partly shaded. This race is rated as among the toughest in the world!

Kedah Chap Goh Mei Celebration 2007 4 March - Tourism Langkawi & Langkawi, Chinese Associations

Chap Goh Mei represents the fifteenth and final day of the Lunar New Year period as celebrated by Chinese communities. The term is from the Hokkien dialect and literally means the fifteenth day of the first month. Activities include the colourful throwing of oranges into the sea by young maidens.

World Universities Peace Invitational Debate (WUPID) 2007 17 - 23 March - H & G Strategic Communications

This is the first event of its kind that would exclusively be a venue for 60 all-star university debating teams to air their views on peace related issues.

APRIL

Launching of National Water Festival 2007 & Langkawi Water Fest 2007 6th - 8th April - Tourism Langkawi

As the selected venue for the Opening of the National Water Festival 2007, the Langkawi Water Fest, which kicks off simultaneously, promises endless thrills and spills at Pantai Legenda. More than 30 exciting water sports and beach games will be held throughout the three day event, promising participants top prizes, and lucky draws for visitors!

Langkawi Koh Adang International Fishing Challenge (LANG-KAIF) 2007 27th- 29th April - Langkawi Development Authority (LADA)

The cross border fishing competition that pits the skills of the professional and ardent anglers with the breathtakingly-beautiful but challenging waters of the Andaman Sea. Go for the best catch and grab the coveted grand prizes!

Wilderness Challenge Langkawi 2007 29th April - Wilderness Malaysia

An adventure race around the island involving kayaking, rail running,swimming, ropes course, mountain biking and many more! Take part in either of 2 categories : ‘Slow & Steady’ or ‘Fast & Furious’

17th Pelangi Cup International Golf Open Championship 2007 17th May - Meritus Pelangi Beach & Spa Resort Langkawi

The most prestigious golf tournament for amateurs in Langkawi is back for the 17th time running. Among distinguished participants are HRH Sultan of Kedah and his consort, HRH Sultanah of Kedah.

JUNE

Langkawi Firefighting Competition 2007 16th June - Tourism Langkawi , Langkawi Fire & Rescue Dept & Langkawi Tourism Association

A unique event where participants get to show off their fire fighting prowess! Held to create awareness of fire safety the participants are from diverse backgrounds of the local tourism industry; government department: hotels; restaurant and NGOs.

Playsmart Scientific Trail Competition 2007 23rd June - PETRO-SAINS Playsmart Langkawi, Telaga Harbour Park

A competition organised to test the participants' general knowledge of science with top prizes being visits to the Petrosains Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Tourist participation welcome.

JULY

Mu’adzam Shah Trophy Golf Tournament 2007 7th July - Bayview Hotel Langkawi

An established golf tournament in Langkawi, the event has had participants from as far as Japan. The Royal Patron is the HRH Sultan of Kedah. Its also attracts enthusiasts who are keen to compete from among the heads of government departments and Malaysia’s corporate mover and shakers.

Rambutan Trail 2007 13th - 14th July Langkawi Department of Agriculture

Anything and everything to do with Rambutan , the unique hairy local fruit, can be found at this event. There will be lots of fruit picking and sampling, fruit carving demonstrations, as well as other fun contests of the fruity kind.

Hot & Happening Weekend in Langkawi 2007 Carnival Langkawi 2007 20th - 21st July - Tourism Langkawi

Four major national events are simultaneously showcased in one sizzling weekend! They are Colours of Malaysia , Flavours of Malaysia , Mega Sale Carnival and ‘Cuti- Cuti Malaysia’ Tourism Fair. Fashion shows, contests , live band and tradional medley are the highlights.

An overnight fishing competition held along Langkawi’s western shore where participants stand to win many attractive prizes.

Raise the Jalur Gemilang Campaign 2007 25th August - Tourism Langkawi

The 'Jalur Gemilang' is the name of the Malaysian flag. This campaign celebrates the countdown to the Merdeka Day (Independence Day) on 31st August.

The 50th Merdeka Eve Celebration 2007 30th August - Tourism Langkawi & Office of Langkawi Member of Parliament

The Eve of Independence Day is celebrated with a whole evening of song and dance’ poem recitals and sketches to inculcate the patriotic spirit in Malaysians and to nurture from young a love for the country.

50th Merdeka Tea Reception 2007 9th September - Langkawi Municipal Council & Langkawi District Office

A grand tea reception held at the picturesque Eagle Square as part of the celebration of Malaysia’s Independence Day. Tourist and local folks from all walks of life are invited to attend and sample many of the local cuisines served.

Langkawi Ramadhan Bazaar 2007 13th September - 12th October Tourism Langkawi & Langkawi Municipal Council

Ramadan is a Holy month for Muslim around the world where they fast from down till dusk. They then break their fast with many traditional goodies that can easily be found at the local Ramadan Bazaar. The variety of mouthwatering delights is simply amazing!

World Tourism Day 2007 27th Sept - Tourism Langkawi

Hari Raya Aidil Fitri 2007 13th October - Nationwide

This joyous occassion for Muslims all over the world marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the Muslim month of Syawal. In Malaysia it is a 2-day national holiday where, again, the Open House tradition is the norm at every household throughout the land, including Langkawi. Join-in this colourful festival by visiting friends and acquaintances while partaking of the huge assortment of foods.

Langkawi International Fishing Tournament (LIFT) 2007 31 Oct - 4th Nov October Tourism Langkawi & Alu - Alu International

A most challenging event held in the deep blue waters off the enchanting and mysterious Tukun Perak Island, southwest of Langkawi. Avid anglers overnight in the open sea, braving the harsh natural elements in their bid to haul the prized catch that wins the day.

Deepavali Celebration 2007 17th November - Nationwide

The Festival of Lights, which this festival is also known, is celebrated by Hindus the world over. It is a one-day national holiday and as usual the unique Malaysian tradition of holding open houses comes into play.
